The currency of Brazil is the Real, with one Real equalling 100 centavos. Notes come in denominations of R$100, 50, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are in denominations of R$1, as well as 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 centavos. Money can only be exchanged easily at banks and cambios, as well as some hotels. Traveller’s cheques are accepted widely, though to avoid additional conversion charges they should be in US Dollars. ATMs are widespread in most areas, and major international credit and debit cards are accepted. Import of foreign currency is unlimited provided amounts over the equivalent of $1,000 are declared on entry, and export is limited to the equivalent of $4,000. Business General banking hours in most areas are from 1000 to 1600 Mondays to Fridays. Shopping hours are generally from 0900 to 1900, Mondays to Saturdays, with supermarkets and major shopping areas usually having their own operating hours. Handshakes and normal European customs are the way forward in Brazil, and business meetings are usually of the formal kind. Respect for the Catholic church should be observed so not to cause offence. A tip of ten to fifteen percent is normal at most restaurants and hotels. Taxi drivers are not generally tipped.
